What is the "Wet on Wet" technique?
The wet on wet technique, simply refers to painting onto a wet surface. Classical oil painting usually involves long waits for sections to dry and to be worked over and over to add details. With the wet on wet technique you work directly onto a wet surface, applying base colours, then working into them with more colours to produce highlights and effects. its a very quick and effective style of painting..allowing for changes to be made in an instant and also for completed paintings in hours rather than days!
Where did you learn?
Learning the technique is easier than you would think. I started out simply by watching Bob Ross on his tv show, "The Joy of Painting". He made me want to try the technique...from there i purchased one of the Joy of Painting books and tried my hand. mostly unhappy with the results, and after a little surfing on the internet i booked into a class teaching the technique. These classes are generally taken by Certified Bob Ross Instructors; That class gave me all the answers i needed to get enough knowledge of the skills needed and head out on my own. There is a huge amount of information about the technique available on the internet...and even more available from the official Bob Ross company. This includes books, videos, starter packs etc
you can also find people willing to teach their own style and even book private lessons in the comfort of your own home!
Is it expensive to start?
It can be! if you choose to start with all the "right" equipment: ie: the Bob Ross equipment and official supplies....then you will find it can seem daunting.
Having said that all of the official supplies are of a very high quality and standard, so you do get value for money. However, to start with, you might wish to cut back on items like easels and pallettes, even brushes can be of a different brand....
Much of the expense is based on the paints, a continuing resource that will get used of course! The official Bob Ross paints are designed for the technique, but Windsor and Newton and other brands have been succesfully used with perfect results!
The basic "Joy of Painting" starter set is usually about £50-60 to buy..and will give you everything you need for your first ever painting. From there the choice of how much you wish to spend is up to you.
Can you help me?
